John Eugenio Coia

Professor John Eugenio Coia trained in Clinical Microbiology in Scotland, having obtained degrees in Molecular Biology and Medicine from the University of Glasgow. He was a Consultant Microbiologist in NHS Scotland for 26 years before moving to Denmark in 2018. Professor Coia was a Consultant Microbiologist in South-West Jutland Hospital, Esbjerg Denmark between 2018 and 2022 and Clinical Professor of Clinical Microbiology in South Denmark University, and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the University of Glasgow. Following retiral in 2022, Professor Coia continues to be affiliated to the Institute for Health Research (IRS) at South Denmark University as Professor Emeritus (Hospital South West Jutland, Research Unit of Clinical Microbiology )

Professor Coia has had active clinical and research interests in C.difficile infection for many years, and was previously Director of the Scottish Salmonella, Shigella & C.difficile Reference Laboratory, and Medical Director of the Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratories, Glasgow. He has been a member of the ESCMID Study group for C.difficile infections (ESCGD) since 2006, and chaired the group from 2016-19. He has co-authored various guidance documents on diagnosis, infection, prevention and control, and treatment of CDI, including the recently updated ESCGD treatment guidance for C.difficile infection in adults. His other research interests include molecular diagnostic and typing methods, enteric infections, antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections.
