Mikael Boesen

Mikael Boesen is a professor and consultant in radiology at Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital, specializing in musculoskeletal disorders and artificial intelligence (AI), where he is responsible for the department’s research.

He is currently supervising 10 PhD students in MSK and/or AI radiological AI research and he is also a co-founder of the Radiological AI Test Center “RAIT”, established in 2020, which is a non-competitive non-for-profit collaboration between the innovation unit at the Department of Radiology and Scanning at Herlev-Gentofte Hospital and the Radiological Research Unit at Bispebjerg-Frederiksberg Hospital. Since its inception, RAIT has focused on fast-track testing and implementation of AI algorithms in radiology, including assessing the potential value in clinical practice. Working with AI technology’s performance on “real-world data” has provided crucial insights that have revealed the need to establish a new digital governance infrastructure platform to handle these technologies, leading to the public-private collaboration known as the Clinical Imaging Consortium. The CLIC project, funded by a grant from the Innovation Fund, has been working on establishing such a platform within the Capital Region’s firewall since the summer of 2022, one that can handle required legal and governance for secure use of image data for the development, testing, and validation of current and future regulatory-approved AI products before procurement, as well as ongoing quality assurance of these products during potential clinical use.

Additionally, RAIT focuses on the psychological aspects, educational challenges, and innovative procurement processes required to scale the potential benefits of AI algorithms in radiology and healthcare in general. RAIT is funded by two Signature Project Grants from 2020, AIKOA and SMARTCHEST, as well as EU funding from AUTORAY-valid, which expires between Q4 2024 and Q2025.
